Chapter Six

Catching the kitten was taking too long. Matt had lost Kayah, and now it was raining. He rounded the corner of the caretaker’s cottage in time to see the cat’s fluffy orange tail disappear behind a tree. The white tip remained visible.

He approached slowly. “Pippi cat, come here, Pippi cat….”

The tail twitched and froze. “Mrow.”

“Good kitty, stay right there.” His phone buzzed. He couldn’t look at it now. He was so close.

Behind the tree, the kitten sat in a nest of Spanish moss. “You do like your Spanish moss, don’t you?”

“Mrow.”

Matt bent down and scooped up the cat. She climbed out of his arms and settled on his shoulder. “Did you have fun leading me all over?”

“Mrow.”

Matt caught sight of Kayah and waved. She ran toward him. “All right. Let’s get you back to the barn before you get soaked.” Matt held the cat lightly to his shoulder with one hand and pulled out his phone with the other to check his messages.

Matt, this is Hica. Lanie’s water broke. We’re heading to the medical suite.

Matt blinked and scanned the message again, more slowly, to make sure he’d read it right. Lanie was in labor. His mind flooded with a million things he should or shouldn’t have done or let her do the past week. Flying to Florida? Boat transportation? What had he been thinking?

Lanie was in labor.

There was no hospital on Guinevere Island.

Positive self-talk: Don’t freak out. Be calm, soldier. Walk quickly, with purpose. Don’t panic.

He tightened his grip on Pippi and turned in the direction of the main building.

Lanie is in Hica’s care. The first baby always takes longer, their friends with children had told them. There’s plenty of time to get to her and figure out what to do. She’s only minutes away and—

Thunder boomed, getting closer. Pippi dug her claws into his shoulder. Lightning lit up the sky. The kitten screeched and jumped off him. Her little body twisted its way to the ground. She landed on her feet and bolted.

“Oh, no!” Kayah squealed. “Mr. Matt, please!”

Matt groaned. He wanted to get to Lanie, but he couldn’t leave Kayah searching for Pippi in the storm. He took off after the kitten, closing the distance.

Pippi stopped just before the stream that ribboned through the back of the resort’s property. Facing him, she met his gaze. He bent down and reached for her. She backed up.

“C’mon Pippi.”

She backed up again, until she was just a couple feet from the water’s edge. He grabbed for her. She deflected. Behind her, the air began to shimmer.

What the—?

A warning bell sounded in his head, a sense of déjà vu, even as he lunged for the kitten.

Pippi jumped into the shimmer and disappeared.

Charging after her, he found himself someplace else entirely.

He’d forgotten about the portals.

Matt’s heart sank. How would he get back to Lanie now?
